This project served as the cornerstone of my final graduation reel for my 2-year Advanced VFX program at KPU's Entertainment Arts in Vancouver, BC. The endeavor spanned over 4 months, involving countless iterations and valuable feedback from my mentors throughout the development process.
During my 2-year tenure at KPU, I had consistently aspired to undertake a character-driven grooming project. However, since grooming and XGen weren't included in our standard curriculum, I had to seek out online resources independently, immersing myself in numerous YouTube tutorials and specialized courses.
Essential Learning Resources
I'd like to highlight some invaluable resources that every beginner should explore:
1. "Introduction to XGen on FlippedNormals Website" - Michael Cauchi is an exceptional instructor who provides comprehensive understanding of XGen and grooming fundamentals.
2. Sefki Ibrahim's "Grooming in XGen - Pedro Pascal 'JOEL' (Timelapse)" - This YouTube video offered incredible insights into realistic grooming workflows.
3. TexturingXYZ Website Documentation - Extensive tutorials and documentation showcasing how industry artists create photorealistic characters and grooms.
Mentorship and Guidance
Lead Mentor: Sonali Dutta
My mentor Sonali Dutta, a Lead Lookdev Artist currently at Image Engine, was instrumental in bringing this project to life. Our weekly meetings, combined with her constructive feedback and iterations, deepened my understanding of lookdev and lighting. Her consistent emphasis on "following references" became a cornerstone principle I carried throughout the project.
Lighting Mentor: Taeyoung Kim
Taeyoung Kim, a Lighting/Lookdev Artist at Zoic Studios, served as my lighting instructor for the full 2-year program. His guidance was crucial in enhancing my lighting skills and ensuring my assets met production-ready standards.
Project Challenges and Solutions
Hair Styling Approach
From the project's inception, I was determined to avoid generic straight hair grooming. Instead, I aimed for more complex wavy and curly hair styles for both the beard and main hairstyle. While this proved extremely challenging initially, experimenting with region maps ultimately became the key solution for tackling this intricate groom style.
Garment Creation
Surprisingly, the most difficult aspect of this project was garment creation and texturing, as I had no prior experience in this area. The FlippedNormals "Retopo from Marvelous Designer to Maya" YouTube tutorial provided essential guidance during this challenging phase.
My Role and Responsibilities
Throughout this project, I handled multiple aspects:
- XGen Grooming: Created realistic hair, beard, and fabric fuzz using XGen
- Garment Design: Designed garments in Marvelous Designer and textured them in Substance Painter
- Shader Development: Developed hair and beard shaders in Arnold
- Lookdev: Completed comprehensive skin lookdev and shading for realistic integration
- Post-Production: Final color grading and compositing completed in DaVinci Resolve and Nuke
